Resources for Tutors

Hello, Tutors —

The Writing Center is ecstatic that you’re joining us this summer. To help organize resources related to your duties as an online tutor, we’ve created this space; in it, you will find training materials, as well as practical resources for use during your sessions. This, of course, is a “living” site — so please feel free to contribute by email site manager Anthony Breakspear at abreaksp@ucsc.edu.

Summer Group Photo Coming Soon!

Let’s start with the Summer 2020 Online Tutoring Timeline:

a) group tutoring will start during week two and run through week nine; most of these sessions will be 90 minutes.

b) individual tutoring will start during week five for most — week three for a few supporting an additional section.

c) during odd weeks you will meet with your tutor partner for 60 minutes; these will be assigned during training. During your partnership meetings, you will check in with each other — troubleshoot, celebrate, vent, lament, whatever works!

d) during even weeks you will meet for 60 minutes with Faculty Director Anthony Breakspear for on-going professional and pedagogical development.

e) during shifts you are scheduled to work, but don’t have students show up and/or schedule, you will be asked to work on a professional development project of your choosing. The goal here is to create a reservoir of resources for future tutors, faculty, and/or writers. Online Summer Tutor Koji Lewis will be taking the lead on this venture — please feel free to contact him for more information at kqlewis@ucsc.edu.

f) time-keeping and hours worked this summer will be your responsibility to keep track of, however we want to encourage you to keep a log to ensure you’re not working more than you’re getting paid.
